Had a very interesting day at
Womadelaide on Saturday. The Womad festival is a now yearly event held in the city's Botanic gardens featuring music from around the globe on six stages. Sort of like Triple J's "
Big Day Out" but focussing on multicultural music.
I was knocked over by the $92 entry ticket at first, but the event is really well organised & if you can't get your monies worth there would be something wrong.
We entered at 11am & departed some twelve & a bit hours later, in the process seeing around ten acts performing an hour set each.
Certain acts were not too my taste, but I'm sure a lack of exposure to specific cultures was the cause. Other acts were truely brilliant & very unexpected. Such as
The two highlights, in my humble opinion of course, were, irish singer
Cara Dillon &
The Waifs.
Cara both sung & looked like an angel. We actually managed to see her early in the day on a large stage again late at night on a small stage where we sat about six feet from the stage. I have a lot of respect for a performer & their band being able to play pieces they have never performed live before and pull them off flawlessly.
The Waifs were also amazing. I wasn't sure how well their recorded songs would sound live, but even though they are an acoustic outfit, they rocked harder than most bands I've ever seen. I will definately be hunting down their cd.
A bit of preparation will be put into next years venture if we go, such as taking my camera (they were supposed to be banned but everyone else seemed to have one), portable chairs, thermos, light but warmer clothing & sunscreen. I kept a hat on but i've come up a lovely shade of lobster!
